What’s Your Story?

by brngckn on May 17, 2012

The man who shared his almonds and beef jerky with me was from Vietnam. He’d come to the United States before the Vietnam war and had gone home to fight as a pilot when the war started. The gray in his hair was not enough for a man of his age or experience. He worked for an oil company and was going to visit his wife and son in Vietnam who'd never moved to the US. There was a tremendous story there in 34A, and I had his ear for the next 20 hours.

I travel. Not because home is not good enough. Not because I can. But to experience, create my own stories and to share in other's.

I was 12 when I first traveled abroad. My grandmother took me to Denmark and Norway to visit family. I’d like to say that was the start of my travel tales, but it wasn’t. I didn't really take flight until 1996.

I was going through a divorce, and I’d decided that I was finally going to see those pyramids in Mexico that I’d studied in college. The man who is now my husband was my traveling companion on that first journey. So many stories took life there – killer bees, somehow not having to bribe ourselves out of a traffic ticket with the Mexican police, the beginning of a romance, a disappearing giant spider…

Life is a series of stories, some told, some not. Share or listen, they are both learning experiences.

Que Sera Sera

by brngckn on May 15, 2012

Whatever will be, will be!

This past weekend, there was to be an open house where Hoopy Thoughts/Houston Spin Stars were going to share hooping and summer hoop opportunities. The open house was cancelled by the facility. :(

Fellow hooper and friend, Yvonne, worked hard to put this video together, and it should be put to use. It's longish (13 mins) as it was intended to be something we kept looping on the laptop at our table.

Keep hoopin', smilin' and thinkin' hoopy thoughts!

Clean Slate

by brngckn on May 10, 2012

I'm a perfectionist. I expect that I can do everything and well. One benefit of this is that I try a lot things, and I can be pretty determined when I set my eyes on something. I also recognize that my expectations of myself can be unrealistic. I do fail at things, and sometimes I do it in grand style.

About a month ago during a flight lesson, a few things went wrong. One thing went spectacularly wrong.

While practicing power-off stalls, the plane went into a spin. It was not a planned maneuver, nor was the plane rated for acrobatics. It happened fast. I was babbling (loudly, I fear), "Oh s-h-double hockey sticks!" into the mike, watching the world spin and get closer (yes, gravity DOES exist), thinking my number was up.

Thankfully, my flight instructor did know what to do (I still owe him a huge margarita). I pulled myself together and finished the lesson on will power and adrenaline. To top things off, the plane's flaps failed so we landed at a faster than normal speed. I was assured by my instructor, another pilot and my Air Force pilot brother-in-law that I did nothing wrong, the spin just happened.

The next day, I left for Sacred Circularities. I didn't fully process what happened for a couple of weeks. When I did, I got a little scared. But I also began to listen the inner voice that had been telling me (before the unplanned spin) that I needed to take the flight lessons slower, repeating as necessary until I felt comfortable with everything I was doing. Just because there's a curriculum doesn't mean it can't be altered to meet my needs and learning style. "How about a do-over?" I thought. Let's just start the lessons over at the beginning. My comfort level in doing this is more important to me than getting it done in the shortest number of hours.

Failure IS an option. It does not make you or your life a failure. It does not diminish your abilities or limit your options for the future.

Yesterday, I got back the plane. I started over with a clean slate, and it was a good flight.

May 8, 2012

Go stand in front of a mirror and slump. Oh, come on! You can slump better than THAT! Really compress your torso. Round your shoulders. Let it all squish out the sides (lovely muffin top, by the way). I know, it hurts the eyes, right? You want it to all go away. We can make [...]

Botanical Expression

May 1, 2012

I like flowers, plants, trees, the outdoors, so it's probably not surprising to learn that one of my "must see" stops in Singapore was the Botanic Garden and National Orchid Garden. You Can’t

March 30, 2012

Has anyone told you that you can't, that you're not good enough? The line forms behind me. In high school I applied to a summer foreign exchange program and was told that I didn't have enough "sticktoitiveness." (Yes, that's the actual word they used.) I was rejected. Today, I travel the world, exploring nooks and [...]
