The man who shared his almonds and beef jerky with me was from Vietnam. He’d come to the United States before the Vietnam war and had gone home to fight as a pilot when the war started. The gray in his hair was not enough for a man of his age or experience. He worked for an oil company and was going to visit his wife and son in Vietnam who'd never moved to the US. There was a tremendous story there in 34A, and I had his ear for the next 20 hours.
I travel. Not because home is not good enough. Not because I can. But to experience, create my own stories and to share in other's.
I was 12 when I first traveled abroad. My grandmother took me to Denmark and Norway to visit family. I’d like to say that was the start of my travel tales, but it wasn’t. I didn't really take flight until 1996.
I was going through a divorce, and I’d decided that I was finally going to see those pyramids in Mexico that I’d studied in college. The man who is now my husband was my traveling companion on that first journey. So many stories took life there – killer bees, somehow not having to bribe ourselves out of a traffic ticket with the Mexican police, the beginning of a romance, a disappearing giant spider…
Life is a series of stories, some told, some not. Share or listen, they are both learning experiences.
